Huntersville Parks and Recreation’s Adopt-A-Park (AAP) Program is designed to encourage the community be hands-on in helping keep Huntersville’s parks clean, safe and attractive. This program creates a framework under which citizens, citizen groups/agencies and organizations can contribute to the Town by "adopting" a park, and agreeing to improve it through litter pick-up, maintaining flower beds, painting, spreading playground mulch and other manual labor. The program also offers the opportunity for people to get more involved in their community in a way that promotes civic pride, appreciation and awareness.
Currently Huntersville Parks and Recreation manages over 400 acres of parkland in 10 parks. The assistance we receive from adopters’ is invaluable as we make every effort to care for our natural resources.
The AAP program is open to individuals / groups throughout the Town of Huntersville that are interested in bettering our parks:
The Town of Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department (HPRD) provide routine park maintenance and repairs. The adopting individuals and organizations give the park or trail the extra care and attention it needs. Adopters share in improving and enhancing the Town’s parks by working on a variety of approved projects. Adopters have assisted with numerous cleanup, landscaping and facility improvement projects.
Each year, the adoption commitment begins at the beginning of a quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1) and lasts for a period of one or two years. Adopting individual/organizations are asked to make a one-year commitment to their park or trail completing a minimum of four (4) projects per year. However, applications may be taken during the year and the number of expected cleanup project may be prorated according to the adoption approval date. It is each Adopted Park’s contact person’s responsibility to organize four yearly clean-ups and keep track of the group’s total volunteer hours and clean-up supplies, which are provided by Huntersville Parks and Recreation Departmen (HPRD) for each Adopted Park.

In addition, any requests to perform special projects that will materially change adopted space, such as landscaping or facility improvements, should be submitted to the AAP Coordinator in writing at least one month in advance of the desired project date. We are excited that you wish to improve the park, and we want to work with you to ensure that your efforts leave a lasting positive effect.
The appropriate Town departments will review your request to ensure that the project complies with applicable safety, environmental, and legal restrictions; that it is consistent with the overall design, use, and maintenance of the park or trail, and that the date does not conflict with activities scheduled for the facility. The AAP Coordinator will respond to your organization with required guidelines for that special project.

A service a sign will be displayed in a prominent part of the adopted park acknowledging your organization's / individual service to the parks.
Adopters can also be issued Certificates of Appreciation, have their agency / organization or individual name highlighted on Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department's (HPRD) website and letters of recognition written on behalf of the adopter by the department’s director.
If you are a group, appoint a contact person to ensure clear communication. Contact the Adopt-A-Park program coordinator to discuss the parks and trails currently available for adoption and any questions you may have about the program. Complete the Adopt-A-Park Adopting Application (PDF) with the AAP Coordinator for the specific park or trail you wish to adopt. Register your volunteers, contact the coordinator to schedule your first event and reserve any equipment or supplies you may need. At the event, review the Safety Guidelines and instructions for where to leave trash and recycling with your volunteers.
At this moment, the Town of Huntersville does not accept payments via the internet or over the phone. All payments must be processed through a check or cash mailed or hand-delivered to the Town.

As part of the submittal process, you will need to submit a TIA Determination of Need form. An evaluation of this form will determine whether you are required to complete a Traffic Impact Analysis for your project.
To request that street lights be taken over by the Town, a street light request application must be submitted. It is not a guarantee that all street lights will be taken over by the Town. Street lights are accepted based on the annual budget set by Town officials. If your street lights are not taken over by the Town, they will be added to a waiting list and accepted in the order of requests received.

Fire hydrants are the responsibility of Charlotte Water. If you see a hydrant flowing water, with no utility crew in immediate vicinity doing work, we ask that you call 311 or 704-336-7600 and report the issue. Frequently, Charlotte Water will flow water, from fire hydrants, to improve water quality and clarity.

Yes, residents are able to use small commercially purchased fire pits for recreational fires (such as fire pits for entertainment, warming or cooking). If any dimension of a shed is greater than or equal to 12 feet, or if the total area of the structure is greater than or equal to 144 square feet, then a building permit is required. If all dimensions of a shed are less than 12 feet and the area of the structure is less than 144 square feet under you will only need a zoning permit.

For building permits: If your property is located in a subdivision you will obtain your permit solely through Mecklenburg County 980-314-CODE(2633) (there are a few exceptions to this rule - contact the Huntersville Planning Department 704-875-7000). If your property is not located in a subdivision, your building permit application should be submitted to Mecklenburg County with a complete plot plan and the permit will be electronically routed to Town of Huntersville Planning Department Staff for zoning review. A fee may apply for manufactured homes, properties located outside subdivisions, and for subdivisions with special conditions.

You will need a building permit to construct a deck since it is a load bearing structure. Be sure to obtain a building permit before you begin construction.

Impervious ground cover is any structure or ground cover consisting of asphalt, concrete, stone, brick, terrazzo, roofing, ceramic tile or any other natural or man-made material that prevents the absorption of surface water into the soil.Further, Built-upon Area (B.U.) shall include that portion of a development project and/or lots that are covered by impervious or partially impervious cover including buildings, pavement, gravel areas (e.g. roads, parking lots, paths), recreation facilities (e.g. tennis courts), etc. (Note: Wooden slatted decks and the water area of a swimming pool are considered pervious.)

In 2006, the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) adopted the 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan. CATS is currently in the process of re-imagining various transit lines within this plan. A first step was completed in 2016 with the adoption of the LYNX Silver Line light rail alignment. Next, the LYNX System Update will revisit the rapid transit vision for Charlotte's North corridor.
In the west, the LYNS West Corridor alignment is being revisited. Originally slated for streetcar, CATS will be reevaluating the corridor due to several changes and advancements in the area.

The Mecklenburg County Trial Court Administrator and District Attorney’s Office have developed an online application that will provide eligible drivers an opportunity to resolve certain traffic citations without having to make a court appearance. It is hoped the online application will save citizens travel costs and their personal time.
Drivers must use this service at least 14 days prior to their court date or they have to attend the Administrative Court to get their citation dismissed or reduced. Also, if a driver receives a citation with two charges, the online service cannot be used.

Effective October 1, 2009 North Carolina legislators amended North Carolina general statutes 66-164 and 66-165 relating to the purchase of precious metals. As of October 1, 2009 any person engaging in the business of purchasing precious metals must obtain a precious metal permit. Precious metal dealers licensed prior to October 1, 2009 must comply with the ratified bill beginning January 1, 2010.

New officers coming straight from BLET will be in the Patrol Training Officer (PTO) program for 16 weeks, and must be recommended for release by Command Staff. Lateral transfer officers may have an abbreviated PTO program, depending on experience. Lateral officers must also be recommended for release by Command Staff.
Yes. Out of state officers must have served in a full-time sworn capacity for more than two years and not have been separated for more than three years. At a minimum, out of state transfer officers must take the legal unit and any other identified training BLET Course and successfully pass the full BLET state examination within their 12-month probationary period.
We strive to select the most qualified applicants and are currently looking for BLET certified candidates.
Most of the specialized units require at least three years of successful patrol experience. Lateral officers with relevant training and experience might be eligible as determined by the Chief of Police.
Directive 1.16 states:
“(a) Tattoos or brands may be visible as long as the tattoo or brand cannot be considered unsuitable, offensive or could bring discredit upon the Police Department.
(b) Applicants for employment and current employees are subject to having their existing tattoos, body modification, body art or brands inspected by the Chief of Police or his/her designee to determine whether they are considered unsuitable, offensive, or could bring discredit upon the agency; and are required to provide photographs of same. Photographs of tattoos located in areas covered by undergarments are not required, however must be disclosed at the time of application for employment. All applicants must complete a Body Art Screening Form and submit it as part of their application package.
(c) The Chief of Police reserves the right to reject applicants based on this policy, and require any employee to cover any tattoos which he/she deems unsuitable, offensive or may bring discredit to the police department.”

Huntersville Police Officers are entrusted with the responsibility to keep our town safe from crime and disorder. Therefore, a history of ethical and moral behavior is of the utmost importance. Your background will be looked at very closely. Applicants who have a history of unethical or immoral behavior will not be hired. Applicants will be subjected to an intensive background evaluation, which will include but is not limited to the following:

Every 2-3 years the Town commissions a third-party engineering firm to evaluate all 200+ miles of streets that the Town maintains. Each street segment is given a "pavement condition rating" between 0 and 100, with a 100 being perfect condition and 0 being very poor condition. The Town then uses these scores to prioritize our resurfacing efforts each year. The Town does not resurface streets based on citizen requests, for aesthetic purposes or to enhance property values.
To determine whether a street is maintained by the Town or the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), find your street on the Town's Powell Bill Map. Alleys are not public streets and are maintained by the HOA.
It is the responsibility of the property owner or the HOA to maintain, prune, and trim all street trees (trees within the planting strip) in front of the property in question. More information of tree trimming standards can be found on the website.

"No Parking" signs are added/removed on a petition basis. Please contact your HOA to get the process started. Once we receive notification of the request, staff will make an on-site evaluation to determine the need for sign addition/removal.
Parking restrictions are enforced by the Huntersville Police Department.
The Town's Adopt-A-Street Program has been established to address this need and enable residents, community and civic organizations, or religious and social groups to contribute toward our town beautification efforts.
Participants have the choice of two levels of adoption commitments: “Major” and “Minor.”
Major adoptions include the adoption of town maintained streets that are at least 0.25 miles in length and approved by the Town to include the adoption provisions of safety vests, gloves, trash bags and a road sign identifying you or your group as the adopter of the street.
Minor adoptions include the adoption of town maintained streets that are at least 0.25 miles in length and are not approved by the town to include adoption provisions, due to the minimal amount of potential clean up required. Participants must provide their own safety and clean up equipment for minor adoptions.
