Social Districts

Under the provisions of Sections 160A-205.4 and 18B-300.1 of the North Carolina General Statutes, local governments may establish "social districts" within their jurisdictions.

Social districts are defined outdoor, common areas in which a person may consume alcoholic beverages sold by permitted establishments (e.g., bars, breweries, restaurants) in designated containers.

On June 6, 2022, Town Commissioners passed an ordinance establishing a social district, designated as the “Birkdale Village Social District.”  The social district will operate Monday through Sunday between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

As part of that process, a maintenance and operations plan was produced to outline the management and maintenance of the designated social district to protect the health and safety of the general public.

The maintenance and operations plan and detailed rendering of the boundaries of the social district have been posted to the town’s website as directed by statute.
