Lake Norman Teen Council
“By Teens 4 Teens”
The Lake Norman Teen Council has been
established to plan fun community activities
for teens living in Davidson, Cornelius,
and Huntersville. If you have ideas about social, recreational, or volunteer activities for the North Mecklenburg Teens, please attend a monthly teen meeting or contact your local parks and recreation department.
Teen Council Question & Answers
What is The Lake Norman Teen Council? – The Council has been established to provide North Mecklenburg teens in high school and
middle school an opportunity to develop a foundation for volunteer opportunities, social interaction, programming, teamwork, and leadership skills. Teens will serve the community and create programming for their peers in a fun, safe, and structured environment with advice and guidance from their adult advisors.
Who makes up Teen Council? – High School and Middle School teens who live in North Mecklenburg. The Council is comprised of
teens who express an interest in actively developing opportunities for all teens in the community.
Who Governs the Teen Council? – There is an Executive Board comprised of teens elected by their peers in the council. The board office positions are limited to high school students with an exception of three middle school positions for Program Committee members.
Advisors to the council are three adult Parks and Recreation staff members from Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville.
What type of events and activities can we expect? – The teen council will determine events with approval from the Advisory Board. Some suggested activities are an ice skating trip to Center City, mystery
dinner theatre, and volunteer outreach projects with local non-profit organizations.
What is a parent’s role? – A parent’s role is to support teen participation in council activities, and provide transportation to various activity locations. In order to develop independence in our teens, parents
should neither plan to attend meetings nor plan to chaperone events.
The Parks and Recreation Departments will handle these responsibilities. However, parent inquiries are always welcome.
Will adult supervision be provided for all teen activities & events? Parks and Recreation staff members will provide an adult ratio of 1:15 teens at all activities and events.
Are there costs or fees, and how does a teen sign up for an event or activity? How do I register? – At this time there are no membership fees. Event and trip activities may incur a fee depending on the activity.
You may register for an activity or become a member of the teen council at Davidson Parks and Recreation, www.d-recs.org>www.d-recs.org or 704-
892-3349. All town websites will have updated information.
What events are coming up? – Please check the Huntersville, Cornelius, or Davidson Parks & Recreation Department’s web sites.
