The Engineering and Public Works Department is responsible for town streets and right-of-way maintenance, storm water repair, solid waste removal, recycling, sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter repairs, and maintenance of public buildings and grounds among other improvements to the Huntersville infrastructure.
The Town contracts its garbage collection and recycling services to a private contractor, Waste Management. Residents are given a Brown Can for Yard Waste collection, a Green Can for Garbage collection and up to two (2) recycling bins for recyclables. See links to the left for specifics about collection of each of these items.
Also, in Huntersville, many services that are "traditionally" handled by cities or towns are instead handled by other local government agencies. Water and sewer issues within the Town, for example, are usually addressed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department. Storm water issues are a function of Mecklenburg County Storm Water Services. There is a similar arrangement with regard to electricity. The Town owns an electric distribution system serving 4,660 customers in Huntersville. Duke Power and Energy United serve the rest of the Town.
Street and Road Maintenance
As a general rule, the Town maintains subdivision streets. Many
of the other streets within the Town limits are actually State roads
or highways. Therefore, they are maintained by the N.C. Department
of Transportation. To view a map that indicates which streets are
Town-maintained and which are not, click

Town Engineering Standards and Procedures Manual
Previously, the Town of Huntersville utilized the Mecklenburg County Land Development Standards for reference in review of plans for development within the Town. As of November 16, 2009, the Town has published an Engineering Standards and Procedures Manual for utilization in review of plans for development within the Town. All new development plan submittals (those plans submitted for the first time after November 16, 2009) will need to utilize these standards and procedures. The manual (PDF format) can be downloaded by clicking HERE. Hard copies of the manual are available for purchase.
