The Towns of Huntersville and Cornelius have teamed up to offer a variety of programs for people with disabilities. The goals of this program are to provide the opportunity to socialize with peers, improve self-esteem, engage in physical activity, learn new skills and increase independence.

If you want to make a difference and create memories that will last a lifetime..... We have the perfect opportunity for you! VOLUNTEERS are an integral and valued part of our special needs programming. Therefore, we are always recruiting enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to participate. The good news is that becoming a volunteer for children or adults with special needs is something virtually anyone can do if you have a strong desire to help others learn, feel good about themselves and have fun! Special Needs Youth Programs:

 Special Needs Top Soccer
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Saturdays, April 14 – May 19, 9:00-10:00AM (register by Wednesday, April 11)
Where: Richard Barry Memorial Park, 13707 Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville
Fee:  $35 resident/$40 non-resident
TOP Soccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers.  The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 5-16 years, who has a mental or physical disability.  Our goal is to empower the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the US YOUTH SOCCER family.
Sailors with Special Needs
Who: Individuals with special needs of ALL ages, plus their family members
When: Saturday, May 19, 12:00-4:00PM (register by Wednesday, May 16)
Rain Date:  Sunday, May 20, 12:00-4:00PM
Where: NC Sailing and Rowing Center at Blythe Landing
Fee:  FREE!  Donations to the Sailing Center are appreciated, but not required.
This free event is held for individuals of all ages who have special needs due to cognitive/neurological disabilities.  Highly qualified NCCSR Center volunteers offer 30-60 minute “navigational expeditions” aboard their Flying Scot sailboats.  Held twice a year, this is an opportunity for special needs individuals and their immediate families to experience the thrills of being out on the water.
 Camps

Special Needs Swimming Program
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, June 12 & 14, 19 & 21, 26 & 28, 9:15-10:00 AM
Where: Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatic Center, 11725 Verhoeff Road
Fee: $55 resident, $60 non-resident
Register by Wednesday, June 6.
Participants will build their confidence and comfort in the water while learning basic swimming strokes and techniques.  Each participant will have an individual volunteer to swim with them, and two licensed physical therapists will teach water skills.  

Special Needs Horseback Riding Camp
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Monday, June 25 - Friday, June 29, 1:00-3:00PM
Where: KIDS REIN is located at Latta Equestrian Center, 6201 Sample Rd., Huntersville, NC
Fee: $50 resident, $55 non-resident
Register by Thursday, June 21.
This camp will be held completely outdoors.  Kids Rein is an equestrian program developed specifically for youth with special needs.  Campers will have equine-assisted activities to improve muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, motor development as well as emotional well-being. In addition we will have alternate activities at picnic tables and under a shaded shelter area.  Please bring your own snack and a water bottle every day.  

Special Needs Explorer’s Camp
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Monday, July 9 - Friday, July 13, 1:00-3:00PM
Where: JV Washam Elementary School, 9611 Westmoreland Road, Cornelius
Fee: $50 resident, $55 non-resident
Register by Thursday, July 5.
Instruction led by Pamela Orf, CBRS/Play Therapy.  Explorers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of centers addressing language, motor, cognitive, and social emotional domains. Games and sensory tables will allow for opportunities to experience different sensory systems. Participant will have an individual volunteer to engage them at their developmental level. Each day will be a different theme to explore: Monday Under Water Adventure, Tuesday on the Farm, Wednesday in the Community, Thursday exploring the Great Outdoors, and Friday to the Moon.  Please bring your own snack and a water bottle every day.  

Special Needs Fun With Fitness Camp 
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Monday-Friday, July 16-20, 1:00-3:00PM
Where: The Little Gym of Huntersville and Lake Norman
Fee: $50 resident, $55 non-resident
Register by Thursday, July 12.
Each day participants will practice tumbling, coordination, sports techniques, sensory exploration, fine and gross motor skills.  Participants will each have their own volunteer to keep them engaged and having fun.  Please bring your own snack and a water bottle every day.  

Special Needs Bowling Camp
Who:  Ages 5–16 years
When: Monday, July 30 - Friday, August 3, 1:00-3:00PM
Where: Northcross Lanes, 16317 Statesville Road, Huntersville
Fee: $50 resident, $55 non-resident
Register by Thursday, July 26.
Children will learn the skills of the sport of bowling, meet new friends, and enjoy the activities planned.  There will be a quiet room reserved for us to play games, do puzzles, read and complete fine motor activities.  Please bring your own snack and a water bottle every day.  Pizza-Party Friday: On the final day of camp each camper will get a slice of pizza, a drink, and 5 tokens to use with parents at the close of that day.   


Special Needs Adult Programs:

Special Needs Adult Monthly Program: Bowling at Northcross Lanes
Who:  Age 16 years and up
When: Friday, April 13, 7:00-9:00PM (register by Wednesday, April 11)
Where: Northcross Lanes, 16317 Statesville Road, Huntersville
Fee:  $10 resident/$15 non-resident
Northcross Lanes Bowling is an exciting facility with florescent lighting and decor.  Each person bowling must pre-register: guardians are welcome to freely assist with bowling, but if you are playing too, please register yourself separately.  No food will be provided but you are welcome to purchase your own food at Northcross Lanes’ snack bar.  

Special Needs Adult Monthly Program: Summer Luau
Who:  Age 16 years and up
When: Friday, May 11, 7:00-9:00PM (register by Wednesday, May 9)
Where: Community Room at Cornelius Town Hall
Fee:  $10 resident/$15 non-resident
Let’s celebrate that summer is on its way with a big Luau Party inside Cornelius Town Hall Community Room.  Enjoy tropical music, luau decorations, summer snacks and lemonade.  We’ll play a few games to give away prizes.  Let the summer begin!
