Calendar Year 2013 was another record breaking year for park and facility attendance in the Town of Huntersville -- Congratulations to the staff and volunteers of the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department!
The Department keeps traffic counts and attendance counts at its four largest parks and five gymnasiums. These nine facilities and parks saw more than 1.3 million visits in 2013 -- an increase of more than 7% over 2012.
For the third straight year, North Mecklenburg Park was the most visited park in Huntersville with more than 361,000 visits. Richard Barry Memorial Park saw a 19% increase from 2012, which was the largest increase of all parks and facilities.
The Parks and Recreation Department has been keeping attendance records since 2005. With the addition of new parks and expansion of existing parks, the increased attendance has gone from 602,446 visitors in 2005 to 1,329,140 visitors in 2013. That is a 120% increase. During that same time period, Huntersville’s population has grown by roughly 31%.
Looking ahead, 2014 is poised for even more growth in participation in our parks and facilities as the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department will host 59 tournaments, another record. The number of tournament requests for Huntersville fields also increased from 75 in 2012 to 89 in 2013, the most ever for the department.
The Town strives to meet demand for facilities and is currently identifying the location to construct a multi-court recreation center facility as one of the projects approved by voters during the 2012 bond referendum.
