The Carolina Diving Academy had three members of their Elite team sign national letters of intent at the Huntersville Town Council meeting Monday evening.
Harrison Mitchell, Sr., Hough High School, Cornelius NC, signed with North Carolina State University. Mitchell is an AAU Diving national champion, eight-time USA Diving Junior National qualifier and 2012 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A State Champion.
MaryEllen Targonski, Sr. South Pointe High School, Belmont NC, signed with Duke University. Targonski is an AAU Diving Bronze medalist, three-time USA Diving Junior National qualifier and 2013 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A State Champion.
Brendan Schaffer, Sr. South Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte NC, signed with Incarnate Word University in San Antonio TX. Schaffer is an AAU Diving National finalist, USA Diving national qualifier and placed fifth at the 2013 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championships.
“We wanted to have our divers sign
their letters of intent here to show you a tangible benefit of this community’s support of the aquatic sports in general and diving specifically,” said Aaron Hintz, head coach for the Carolina Diving Academy. “And to thank you for that support.”
“I am extremely proud of this year’s graduating class,” said Hintz later. “Harrison has been an anchor in our program for the last six years and a perennial national qualifier; But MaryEllen and Brendan are relatively late starters in diving – MaryEllen in her sophomore year and Brendan, his junior – they worked particularly hard to become elite divers. NC State, Duke and Incarnate Word University are fortunate to have athletes of this commitment level and quality as a part of their programs.”
