The Town of Huntersville’s Parks and Recreation Department will host 59 different tournaments on our towns’ athletic fields and facilities in 2014!
At their annual Tournament Selection Committee meeting late last month, the Department reviewed 87 tournament requests from 14 different sports organizations. Tournament requests have been around 75 the past few years, but the 87 was quite an increase.
The 59 tournaments approved for 2014 marks the highest number ever for the town and department. These events include: Youth Baseball, Youth Softball, Adult Softball, Senior Softball, Youth Volleyball, Youth Tackle Football, Youth Soccer, Adult Tennis and Youth Basketball. Five additional sports are included in this year’s approved slate of tournaments, including: grass volleyball, senior softball, ultimate Frisbee, adult futsal indoor soccer and kickball.
“If we didn’t have a lot of great support from everyone, this wouldn’t happen,” said Facility and Tournament Supervisor Steve Roberson. “You don’t understand how many compliments we get on our staff and facilities. I do bid presentations, but the facilities sell themselves!”
The town looks to expand its facilities in the near future with a new recreation center planned for design in fiscal year 2014 and construction could begin in 2015. This project will be funded with the remainder of 2003 park bonds ($300,000) and $3.82 million from 2012 bonds voters approved last November. The 2020 Parks and Recreation Masterplan called for four new indoor gyms by 2020 and this facility will allow the town to meet that need in one facility with 1/3 the staffing impact. These courts will be multi-use for basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer, indoor tennis and more.
