NCDOT expects to open Gilead Road in Mecklenburg County this evening; Additional work will take place next week under lane closures
The N.C. Department of Transportation is working to open Gilead Road west of McCoy Road in Huntersville later today, after heavy rains damaged the roadway in late June.
NCDOT has been working with a contractor to replace the failed pipe under the roadway, and has coordinated work with Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities and Piedmont Natural Gas to restore utility lines.
Today, the contractor will begin placing asphalt to have the road open to traffic this evening.
The final road surface will not yet be in place, so motorists will experience bumps and unevenness on the opened section over the weekend. NCDOT crews will finish paving Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 3 and 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Flaggers will move traffic through the area one direction at a time.
