On November 16, 2016, as a result of extreme dry conditions and in partnership with the Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal’s Office; the Huntersville Fire Department placed a ban on all open burning effective immediately. This ban includes recreational fires.
Open burning includes the burning of leaves, branches, and other plant materials. It is illegal to burn trash, lumber, tires, newspapers, plastics or other non-vegetative materials.
Recreational fires include: fire pits, bonfires and camp fires. Cooking fires, which include grills and cookers are permitted; however, residents are asked to use extreme caution.
A ban on open burning and recreational fires is necessary to avoid fires similar to those in the Western North Carolina.
