On September 1, 2016, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) held a public meeting at Huntersville Town Hall (101 Huntersville-Concord Rd.) to inform officials and the public about two proposed transportation projects (STIP Nos.I-5714 & U-5114). Both projects propose non-traditional intersections, which have greater capacity than traditional intersection designs.
Representatives spoke about a proposed project to upgrade the interchange on I-77 at exit 23 on Gilead Rd. to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) (STIP No. I-5714). The purpose of the DDI is to reduce delay and congestion. This DDI is unique because it involves the construction of an additional bridge that will run parallel to the existing bridge on I-77 at Gilead Rd. Click here to view how the DDI works
Representatives were also on hand at the meeting to educate the public about proposed improvements at U.S. 21 (Statesville Rd.) and Gilead Rd. (STIP No. U-5114). Improvements will include a median U-turn design in addition to bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. The median U-turn design prohibits motorists from making left turns at intersections. More information on this project can be found here.
