http:///Monday night, new Huntersville Mayor John Aneralla hosted a Huntersville Transportation Projects Informational Meeting at Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen. About 80 area residents and business owners attended to hear an update from Town engineering and transportation staff on two major projects on the horizon that are aimed at reducing congestion along several of Huntersville’s busiest roads –US21/Gilead Road and NC-115 and Main Street. NOTE: This was only an informational meeting. Official meetings, per state and federal public involvement guidelines, will be held in the future regarding both of these projects.

Main Street Improvements (also known as NC-115 two way pair)

Description: Provide an alternative route to NC-115 (Old Statesville Road) through downtown Huntersville by upgrading Main Street and linking it to NC-115 with new connections in the vicinity of Mt. Holly-Huntersville Rd (south end) and 4th St (north end.)

Schedule: Planning document is underway. Construction anticipated to be awarded in calendar 2018-19 time frame.

Budget: Current estimate is $9-10 M. Sources of funds are $4-5 M from Town Bonds and $5 M from Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization Bonus Allocation funds.

More information: No website yet. Please give name and contact info to Bobby Williams at bwilliams@huntersville.org or Sushil Nepal at snepal@huntersville.org for notification when additional information is available or e-mail.

Gilead Rd/Statesville Rd Intersection Improvements

Description: Provide significant congestion relief, safety improvements, and multi-modal provisions at the intersection of Gilead Road and Statesville Road (US 21) by: adding lanes, redirecting left turns to signalized u-turn locations, widening both roads some distance away from the intersection, providing for bicyclists and pedestrians, providing local connections to shopping centers, and modifying access.

Schedule: Planning document is complete and approved, engineering underway. Major construction anticipated to be awarded in early calendar 2018 in conjunction with revisions to the interchange of I-77 and Gilead Rd by NCDOT to convert Exit 23 to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). As was stated at the meeting Monday night, this will operate similar to the new interchange at Poplar Tent and I-85. Town intends to construct local connections earlier if possible.

Budget: Current estimate is $12.5 M. Sources of funds are $5.4 M of Town bonds plus federal funds at the discretion of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization ($3.6 M Direct Attributable funds and $3.5 M Bonus Allocation funds.)
