This will be a busy weekend in Huntersville as tens of thousands of motorists will be driving through parts of Huntersville to access Charlotte Motor Speedway for Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race and the Carolina Renaissance Festival. All lanes on NC73 will be open, but motorists should expect delays due to volume.
Motorists using NC73 and Poplar Tent Road to access I-85 to attend the race should be aware of the Carolina Renaissance Festival as the festival takes place Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is located at 16445 Poplar Tent Road, just south of the intersection of NC73/Poplar Tent. The Renaissance Festival employs off-duty officers to direct traffic from both directions on Poplar Tent Road.
The Carolina Renaissance Festival encourages Saturday's attendees to come out early and are planning a special Pre-Opening Gate Show for those who arrive at 9:30 a.m., before their gates open at 10 a.m.
The primary routes for Carolina Renaissance Festival traffic through Huntersville are NC73 to Poplar Tent Rd., Huntersville-Concord Road to Poplar Tent Rd., and I-85 to Poplar Tent Rd.
Though the race does not officially start until 7:30, activities will be taking place at the speedway most of the day, resulting in a steady stream of cars throughout the region.
Interstate 77 offers alternate access to Interstate 85. Motorists traveling south on Interstate 77 may want to consider exiting on Harris Blvd (exit 18) or I-85 to avoid potential traffic jams. Through Huntersville, Eastfield Road (Harris Rd as you enter Cabarrus County) offers alternate access to Poplar Tent Road, which leads Cox Mill and Derita Roads that connect to Concord Mills/Bruton Smith Blvd and straight to Interstate 85.
The Town of Huntersville urges motorists to plan accordingly and hopes everyone has a safe weekend!
