NOTICE OF CITIZENS INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS TO INTERSTATE 77 TO CONSTRUCT HIGH OCCUPANCY TOLL LANES

Project No. I-3311C & I-4750 (HOT) Mecklenburg & Iredell Counties

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold two public meetings called citizens informational workshops regarding construction of High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes on Interstate 77 (Click Here for Announcement and Map). These workshops will provide updated project information and allow the public to view the study corridors.

During the workshops, citizens can meet NCDOT and Project Team staff, and view aerial maps of the project area from 4-7 p.m. Citizens will also have the opportunity to submit written comments or questions, which will be considered during the design phase. Citizens are invited to attend either workshop. There will not be a formal presentation, and the same information will be available at both workshops.
  • Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Avenue, Cornelius.
  • Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Ivory Baker Recreation Center, 1920 Stroud Park Court, Charlotte.
NCDOT proposes improvements to I-77 by constructing High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. Eligible carpoolers, vanpools, motorcycles, and transit vehicles will be able to use the HOT lanes for free while other travelers will be given the option to pay to use the HOT lane. These projects in conjunction with proposed improvements to I-77 between I-277 and Exit 28 (public meetings were held in May 2012 on this portion) will provide continuous HOT lanes along the I-77 corridor from 5th Street to NC 150.

The purpose of the projects is to improve mobility and travel time reliability by managing the traffic flow along these critical portions of I-77. This approach will provide transportation options resulting in more reliable local trips and overall network efficiency.

The projects to be discussed at these workshops include:
  • I-3311C proposes to construct HOT lanes on I-77 from 5th Street (Exit 10) to north of I-85 near the Cindy Lane overpass & I-277 from I-77 to North College Street. Additional right of way will be required.
  • I-4750 (HOT) proposes to construct HOT lanes on I-77 from West Catawba Avenue (State Road 5544) Exit 28 in Cornelius to NC 150 Exit 36 in Mooresville. Additional right of way may be required.
